Spruce Up Your Home For Summer
How to get your home and garden ready for the long, hot
summer...Decks:
For treated wood or composite decks, first sweep, then hose
off and scrub with three to five drops of mild liquid
dishwashing detergent to one gallon of water. Fix any cracks,
splinters and protruding nails or screws.
Plastic Furniture:
Wash with a solution of one tablespoon of laundry detergent,
3/4 cup of household bleach and one gallon of water. Rinse well.
Wicker Chairs:
Turn upside down, and shake. Remove any remaining dirt with
a clean paintbrush or your vacuum's upholstery tool.
Natural Wood Picnic Tables:
Scrub with one cup of ammonia (suds or regular) a1/2 cup of
vinegar dissolved in one gallon of water. Rinse.
Barbecue Grills:
Clean grates with liquid dishwashing detergent and water.
Rinse well and dry.
Wrought Iron:
Brush off dirt, wash well with liquid dishwashing detergent
and water, and then dry. If the finish is peeling, sand and
apply a coat of rust inhibiting paint.
Bird Feeders:
Take them apart, and clean thoroughly inside and out.
Clay Pots:
Remove white lime stains on the outside of clay pots by
wiping with an old towel soaked in vinegar.
Ceiling Fans:
Switch off at the circuit breaker. Brush off surface dust,
and wipe blades with a damp cloth.
Swing Sets:
Check for safety...tighten loose screws...check for parts
that may catch clothing or scratch skin.
Storm Screens:
Remove from windows, stand screens against a wall, hose off
and scrub vertically and horizontally with an all purpose
cleaner. Dry. Apply a thin coat of car wax to the frame before
reinstalling to prevent rust and stains.
